Understanding Young People who display sexually abusive behaviour – an awareness course for Social Workers  Course Objective: 

This one day course has been developed to provide an overview for social workers involved in the provision of services for children and young people who have experienced sexual abuse and the associated traumas.  Participants will gain insight into the behavioural responses exhibited by children and young people who are victims and/or perpetrators of sexual abuse. The course will be of value for all children’s services social workers. 

Course aims: 
  • To provide participants with a basic understanding of the dynamics of sexual abuse and trauma.
 
  • How the impact of sexual abuse and trauma shapes the child or young persons perception of their world.
 
  • To consider the individualised responses of children and young people to their own victim experiences.
 
  • Policy, Practice, Statutory Requirements and Appropriate Responses
 
  • To develop a collaborative work ethic and promote an environment of child centred care.
 
  • To assist social workers to recognise the personal impact issues associated with working with these children and young people.

 Initial Assessment, Placement and Planning 

Course objective:

 This two day intermediate course is developed for social workers and criminal justice workers who have previous experience in working with young people who display sexually abusive behaviour or where there are grounds for allegations of a sexually inappropriate nature.  Participants will gain an insight into the management and practical issues required when making an initial response to referrals of sexual inappropriate behaviour.
In relation to sexually harmful
behaviours the course aims to: ·         differentiate between fact and fiction

  • consider the developmental and causational factors
  • enable participants to understand the difference between 'normal' and harmful behaviour
  • address issues relating to victims who become perpetrators
  • enhance clinical assessment skills
  • promote ideas for means of supporting young people and their families
  • develop appropriate public protection strategies and risk management
  • consider the impact on staff
  • consider such work in the context of a child's developmental needs, language, gender, ethnicity, disability or experience of trauma
  • consider the requirements of child protection
  • to enable participants to make informed decisions regarding suitable placements and care planning

Working with family or carers of young people who have sexually abused others  

Course objective: 

This one day course has been developed for social workers and professionals who support families where their child has sexually abused another person or has behaved in a sexually inappropriate way.    

Course aims to enable professional to engage with non-abusive family members helping them to: 

·         Understand the issues and the context of the sexually inappropriate behaviour 

·         Gain an insight into why the sexual behaviour may have happened

·         Offer support where abuse is incestuous

·         Offer support to the perpetrating child

·         Recognise the impact on relationships and family dynamics

·         Meet their own needs

·         Prepare to manage the future

Course Objective: 

This one day course has been developed to provide an overview for residential care staff involved in the provision of care for children and young people who have experienced sexual abuse and the associated traumas.  Participants will gain insight into the behavioural responses exhibited by children and young people who are victims and/or perpetrators of sexual abuse. The course will be of particular value to those who are new to this area of work and will benefit existing carers. 

Course aims: 

  • To provide participants with a basic understanding of the dynamics of sexual abuse and trauma.
 
  • How the impact of sexual abuse and trauma shapes the child or young persons perception of their world.
 
  • To consider the individualised responses of children and young people to their own victim experiences.
 
  • To help residential care staff develop a pro-social environment with clear and appropriate boundaries to enable children and young people to make positive changes.
 
  • To develop a collaborative work ethic and promote an environment of therapeutic care.
 
  • To assist residential care staff to recognise the personal impact issues associated with working with these children and young people.

Course Objective: 

This one day course has been developed to provide an overview for foster carers involved in the provision of care for children and young people who have experienced sexual abuse and the associated traumas.  Participants will gain insight into the behavioural responses exhibited by children and young people who are victims and/or perpetrators of sexual abuse. The course will be of particular value to those who are new to this area of work and will benefit existing foster carers. Course aims: 

  • To provide participants with a basic understanding of the dynamics of sexual abuse and trauma.

Public Protection, Social Integration and Young People Who Display Sexually Inappropriate Behaviour 

Course objective:

 This one day course is aimed at social workers, criminal justice practitioners and professionals who operate within a community safety plan and public protection criteria.  Participants will gain an insight into the management and practical issues required when making decisions of public safety while recognising the needs of the client. 

The course aims to develop an understanding of:  

  • Public protection and risk in context
 
  • Dangerousness: What it is and what its not
 
  • Risk management strategies:
 
      • During assessment period
      • Intervention period
      • Post intervention period
 
  • Transition from custodial settings and supported living to independence
 
  • Multi-agency, Multi-disciplinary or Inter-agency?
 
  • Shared values, strategy, systems and structures
 
  • Good practice and informed decision making
