NON-OFFENDING PARTNER WORK
Independent assessment of the ‘ability to protect’ is often a vital tool in assisting the decision making process for the placement and management of children deemed to be ‘at risk’.
Questions such as ‘did she know?’, ‘how much did she know?’ and ‘why did she not do anything?’ need to be fully explored in order to make informed and appropriate decisions.
In addition, weight needs to be given to considering whether or not Intervention may have an impact on the future placement of children in her care – either as part of a reconstituted family or as a single parent, charged with the responsibility of managing the future safety of her children.
RWA (Ray Wyre Associates) brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to their assessments of non-offending partners and parents of abused children and can provide individually tailored Intervention Programmes either as a ‘stand alone’ piece of work or as part of family work.
The RWA Non Abusing Partner programme can help to:
- raise awareness of behaviours to look out for in her partner
- introduce the non abusing partner to the offence cycle and specifically her partner’s own offence cycle
- share with her partner’s relapse prevention plan and highlight her role as external inhibition.
- help her draw up a list of ‘house rules’ that will help her to protect her children
- draw up a support network of people she can turn to if she is concerned about her partner.
Whilst this programme was initially designed to work with the female non abusing partner, the flexibility of RWA programmes allows the programme to be adapted for male non abusing partners and other family members, for example grandparents or older siblings, who have a role in protecting children.
